Understanding Burnout: More Than Just Being Tired

Burnout is a term we hear often, yet it's frequently misunderstood. It's not just about feeling tired after a long week — it's a chronic state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that fundamentally changes how you experience work and life.
The Three Dimensions of Burnout
The World Health Organisation recognises burnout through three key dimensions:
- **Emotional Exhaustion**: Feeling completely drained, unable to muster energy even for things you once enjoyed. You wake up tired and go to bed tired. - **Cynicism and Detachment**: A growing sense of disconnection from your work, colleagues, and even loved ones. Things that once mattered feel meaningless. - **Reduced Personal Efficacy**: Feeling like nothing you do makes a difference. Self-doubt creeps in, and you question your abilities.
When Does Stress Become Burnout?
Stress and burnout exist on a spectrum. Stress is characterised by over-engagement — too much pressure, too many demands. Burnout is characterised by disengagement — you've moved past stress into a state of emotional shutdown.
The Warning Signs
- Persistent fatigue that doesn't improve with rest - Increased irritability and shorter temper - Difficulty concentrating or making decisions - Physical symptoms: headaches, insomnia, digestive issues - Withdrawal from social interactions - Loss of motivation and purpose
